Windows 8.1 Kiosk Mode

0

Hello,

I am attempting to create a Kiosk mode style build for a touchscreen all-in-one PC.

The requirement will be to severely lock the OS down to give minimal access to the OS whilst allowing the user (possibly joe public) access to a pre-defined list of websites.

The 'Assigned Access' looked to be a god-send as it can do this out of the box, but does not allow me to lock down the IE settings. Also with this only being available to local accounts, I cannot enforce IE restrictions with GPO's.

I would have fully intended of locking down the OS in the traditional manner (as I have done in the past with Win7) of GPO's. Unfortunately, there are no GPO options to disable the metro/start screen. Disableing the start menu was easy as pi on Win7 but seemingly impossible for Win8.

I find this very frustrating as I want to go with the new technology but am not able to find an answer to this.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for this, please bear in mind that I will not be able to use 3rd party tools for this implementation, just GPO's, reg tweaks etc.

Kind Regards

Barry

MAK Volume License Upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1

My organization purchased a multiple-activation key (MAK) for Windows 8 Pro. Well, as I found out, the free update to Windows 8.1 Pro doesn't make itself available in the Store if Windows is activated through a MAK or another volume license key. I'd like to get our Windows 8 Pro users up to 8.1 Pro to enjoy the new OS but it seems this isn't possible.

I've tried the Windows 8.1 Pro VL iso from MSDN, hoping that an in-place upgrade (or a clean install) would make it happen, but it won't take my organization's MAK key from 8 Pro (It spends a few seconds checking it, then reports back "That key doesn't work - try another one".

What's going on here? Does my organization have to re-purchase a MAK key for 8.1? That seems awfully ridiculous considering the update is free for retail and OEM users.

WinPE 4.0 automated ISO deploy.

Hi Guys,

I'm currently working on a project and I'm trying to create a PE image that boots and applys an image inside of the .wim . I have the folder setup, .swm files inside of a folder along with a script that boots into a format and then apply-image of source files I provided.  In testing this, I am immediately presented with an error  - unable to create ramdisk.  The image I'm trying to apply is fairly large, about 11gigs.  I upped the scratchspace on the wim thinking that would help, but even configured at 512mb it still errors out.  I don't even get into the PE environment.  Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong or if there's a better way for me to approach this?  I just need a bootable ISO that will prompt to apply and then apply the image I have embedded in the boot.wim file.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

Bootcamp 5.1.1 on Mac Pro Cylinder can't install Windows 8

Hello!

I'm trying to install Windows 8 in a brand new Mac Pro black cylinder and I'm getting the error:

"BFSVC error unable to load mui file for bcd strings (2)".

This seems to be a brand new error because there are no solutions on Mac side of the world so I'm hoping that a solution can be found on the Windows side of the world.

This is what I posted on the Apple forum. It originally started with a different error.

You can find the original Apple thread and all screen snapshots here:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/24640704#24640704

Here it goes...

I've gone through almost every discussion regarding the common issue "Windows coud not update the computer's boot configuration" but none is related to Bootcamp version 5.1.1 and latest Mac Pro cylinder.

I can't post the url to the original post to Apple because I don't know how to verify my account in this forum.

Based on Jarvil's solution there is a very important thing that is not happening in my case, that is that I never get the option to boot from the "Windows" partition. I only have 3 options, 1) Macintosh HD 2) Recovery 3) EFI Boot.

By not having the option to boot from Windows partition I automatically deviate from Jarvil's solution.

So, I proceed with EFI boot, I reach the step where I have to select the partition and I pick the 4th partition and it says that Windows can't be installed in this partition so I delete/format it and proceed with installation and it goes all well until the very end where it's finishing the install that I get the message:

"Windows coud not update the computer's boot configuration".

So I went on and ran the command prompt...

At the installer's start screen press shift + F10 to get a command prompt.

In the command prompt type

diskpart and hit enter

type

list volume  and hit enter

Note the volume letters and numbers of all the volumes .  One should be an EFI partition of type FAT32 and it will have no drive letter.

Now type

list volume and hit enter (note the letters and numbers of the displayed volumes) One will be your EFI partition of FAT32 type and it will have no letter, just a number.

type

select volume X (where X is the number of your EFI partition) and hit enter

type

assign letter=B and enter

type

exit and enter

type

bcdboot C:\Windows /l en-GB /s B: /f ALL   *** note the /l en-GB is for locality and language and will default to English US if not changed. Obviously you need to change to your own locale and language code***

press enter (after checking all spaces etc). You may also struggle to find the \ key on your keyboard, it may change position once in command prompt!.

After a few seconds it should report that the boot files were written. If it does that you can type in

wpeutil reboot and press enter at which point your Mac will reboot. Hold the Alt key and choose your new EFI Boot option and hopefully Windows will boot.

Then I get the error "BFSVC error unable to load mui file for bcd strings (2)".

Any ideas???

Thank you very much in advance!!

K8-12 School - Creating Microsoft ID’s for windows app store for students

0

For a K8-12 institute, we are trying to use the windows app store. Our younger students we are trying to create Microsoft ID’s for the app store in windows 8, this will allow teachers to start using apps in the classroom. When creating a Microsoft ID for a younger student we are prompted to put in a parental email address (parents also have to create a MS ID) along with a credit card as proof. Parents do not want to do this.

How can the school create Microsoft IDs for students without the parent email address and credit card info.  Is there any way for the schools to be responsible for the accounts and not parents?

An option we do not want to do is: make 1 school account (act similar to the parent account) for every classroom of students. There are many issues with this method, what about next year when kids aren't all in the same classes. How many kids’ accounts can we tie to one account? To do this for hundreds of kids will be a long process. We will need to test and make sure the CC on the school account will not be accessed by the students even if they want to purchase anything. I am also running into the issue the school does not want to use their CC.

Since we assign students emails with our domain @schoolname.com through Office 365 Edu; is there a way Microsoft can disable the verification for the domain? Or other similar type solutions? How have other schools dealt with this?

Windows Store doesn't let me upgrade to 8.1, says I am not administrator

Hello, I am trying to upgrade my Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 with Windows Store. But Store refuses to let me download, saying I do not have administrator rights. I am with an administrator account and a ms account login. But it still doesn't let me. I put UACs at minimum. I tried creating a new admin account, same problem. With the integrated account Administrator, which was desactivated, I can't access Store at all. I did all the updates, I ran a MS FixIt utility to checkproblems with Windows update, it fixed nothing.....

How can I upgrade to Windows8.1? Actually my question should be, how do I give myself the rights to do it?

I am really not happy of not having rights on my own machine.

Thank you for your help. I am really lost here :)

Domain fingerprint login with Windows 8.1

0

I can't find a way to use my fingerprint to login to the domain in Windows 8.1

It seems that Win8 is different that Win7 in terms of allowing for fingerprint domain login.  Based on what I found on another Win7 thread I did some modifications and got this far in terms of fixing the problem:

In Administration Tools go to:

Local Group Policy Editor / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Biometrics

  •  Allow  the use of biometrics(the default is 'not configured')
  •  Allow  users to logon using biometrics(the default is 'not configured')
  •  Allow  domain users to logon using biometrics(the default is 'not configured')

After this the PC will ask you to ‘Lock’ the PC and follow instructions.  I keep restarting the PC but can't get it to work yet; I'm probably misunderstanding something or missed a step.

Windows 8.1 Image +CopyProfileunattend + WDS = profile not customized ?!:(

Hi,

I have deployed Windows 8.1 custom image and i logged on using the audit mode, customize the profile, and then used CopyProfileunattend.xml with sysprep to capture the user profile.

After that, i got an ISO image that i can boot from and indeed the customization in the profile appear.

Now, i deployed WIndows 2012 WDS, i put the custom wim file, boot file, then boot from network and all is fine. Put now when i logged on, all custom apps are there but the profile customizations are not appearing.

Why using WDS, customization not appearing, while booting from the ISO all is working?

After installing Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 Pro, my computer won't boot

0

I have a somewhat new (June 2013) HP laptop originally running Windows 8 Pro. I installed the Hyper-V component right away and it was running great. After testing Windows 8.1 Pro on another computer a couple months ago, I decided to upgrade my HP laptop and Hyper-V continued to work great after the upgrade.

Yesterday, after a Windows Update failed, I was not able to boot my laptop. It would hang with the HP Logo and spinning circle at the point when the Boot Manager normally starts up Windows. Trying to do a recovery reported a failure, but no specific reason except to say boot failed and that a Restart might correct the error, but it would just hang on the HP Logo every time I would try to boot. I reinstalled the Windows 8.1 Pro OS and the laptop was working fine until I would install Hyper-V.

I have gone thru this sequence 3 times. The first time, I pulled the latest Windows Updates, then installed Hyper-V, IIS and some other components and after this install required a Restart, my laptop hung at the HP Logo. The second time, I did not enable any Windows Updates, but installed Hyper-V and IIS and again, after the Restart my laptop hung. So, the final time, I only installed Hyper-V and after the Restart, my laptop hung once again.

Since Hyper-V used to work, it would not seem to make sense that I have a hardware compatibility problem. I have also run the extensive built in firmware Disk tests and other diagnostics taking several hours to complete and these all passed.

I am now using my laptop without Hyper-V and it is working fine, but I hoping to find a reason/solution for the problem caused by installing Hyper-V so that I can once again install and use it.

Windows 8.1 Upgrade doesn't accept Product Keys

0

Howdy guys and gals,

I'm becoming a wheebit frustrated at Windows 8.1 Upgrade.

This is the story so far:I bought an ASUS K75V (with 4 USB ports, that's the reason I needed this model chop-chop as I have to spend a lot of my

time in hospitals). Since I live in Belgium, the basic version pre-installed was a Windows 8 [Dutch]. I asked the company to provide me with an

English version, which they did (had to pay for an additional Windows 8 [UK]). No DVDs were provided, nor any Product Keys.

I asked the local shop to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro [UK], which they did (the third license I paid for). The local shop provided me with the

Product Key, but since the upgrade came in the form of a download, I still don't have a DVD.

Last year, I installed the Windows 8.1 Preview [Evaluation Copy] with the Product Key that came with it.

This evaluation copy expired on January 15th 2014 and ... I'm in the hospital again. I was not warned by this evaluation copy that it would stop

working, which I find a bit rude.

So, after installing Windows 8.1 from the Store, I had to reinstall al my desktop programmes (Acrobat, Office, etc. ... you know the story).

Then I suddenly get the message I have to activate my Windows 8.1 by providing a Product Key. The Window 8 Pro Upgrade Key is not accepted. So,

we had someone call Microsoft Customer Support, and were informed I had to ask ASUS for the Windows 8 Product Key that came pre-installed. ASUS

told us these keys are ROM-coded, so they couldn't provide us with any. As I'm in the hospital for several more weeks hooked up to IVs, I had

the local store buy an online key for Windows 8 (again without DVD as I need it now) from their supplier. Didn't work. Said supplier told us we

needed a new Windows 8 Pro Product Key, not the Windows 8 Pro Upgarde Product Key. So, I bought a new Windows 8 Pro (again without DVD, the

local store passed me the keys over the phone). Again nothing.

So far, I have bought FIVE Windows 8 licenses, and still al unable to activate the bloody Upgrade which was FREE.

HELP.

Thierry Rotty, Guy pretty close to a nervous breakdown if it hadn't been for Sweet Morphine.

Windows 8.1 update download wont resume after computer restarts

0
0

After the Windows 8.1 preview expired (initially from Windows 8.0) windows is trying to download the full 3...Gig under threat of restarting every hour.
Due to slow internet speeds (living in a developing country) I hardly download anything before the computer goes blue screen and restarts. On restart the initial download has reset and I have to start from 0% again.

I can't return to windows 8.0 so how can I stop Windows from restarting or how can I use a download manager to download windows 8.1?

It seems like a relatively common problem so Microsoft should have a solution???

Thanks

Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade

I have installed Windows 8 on a machine using a license obtained from Microsoft Dreamspark while I attended school. I no longer have access to this as I have graduated. From my understanding I am unable to upgrade this machine to 8.1 using this license. Is this correct or is there something I have overlooked?

Using Assigned Access on a Domain user account

We would like to use Assigned Access in Windows 8.1 Enterprise, but it appears to only allow locking down a local user account. Is there any way to lock down a Domain user account with Assigned Access?

PDF Reader not printing after upgrading to Windows 8.1

After installing the Windows 8.1 update, the PDF Reader doesn't print. Documents don't even show up in the queue.  I'm able to print from desktop apps (i.e., Photoshop, Word, etc.) just fine so it appears to be strictly a Reader issue.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Installation of .net 3.5 fails after upgrade from windows 8 to windows 8.1

We have recently bought a new PC with an OEM version of Windows 8 (build 6.2.9200.16384). The first step we carried out was an upgrade from 8 to 8.1, build 8.3.9600.16384.

Some of our applications require the .net 3.5 framework however, with the 8.1 (8.3.9600.16384) upgrade installed we are unable to install the .net 3.5 framework using the DCIM command. "Error: 0x800f081f The source files could not be found"

The source/sxs folder in the EOM installation disc only has the files for the 6.2.9200.16384 build, I assume DCIM is looking for 8.3.9600.16384. Also the features "on demand" through windows update doesn't work as the source does not exist.

Are the installation source folders available anywhere on-line? In particular the "source/sxs" folder for the build version 8.3.9600.16384?

Thanks for your assistance

Displayed main user name not correct

I have upgraded from Win 8 to 8.1 using my system name (my own name) and system password.

Later on I needed something from the Windows Store, which was only posible using my live-account, hence I changed to my live-account (and password). The system apparently did a work around  (I had to wait for some time) and afterwards I had to log in with my live account and password.

So far so good, however my main-user file was changed from "Ger de Jonge" to "Ger" which is very inconvenient. How can I change this again (if this has to be done using the ini file, where can i find it?)

Ger de Jonge
