Standard users with profile redirection cannot login - ending with blank desktop and User Profile Service 1530 error

We have a lot of standard users that login on computers in a common area. Every user has profile and folder redirections to the server.

The system worked fine with Windows 7 machines, but now we have a few with Windows 8.1. When a user logs into W7 everything still works fine, but when they login to W8.1 they get a blank desktop and that's it. A user can logout with CTRL-ALT-DEL menu.

In the event viewer there are two entries with User Profile Service error 1530:
DETAIL -
1 user registry handles leaked from \Registry\User\S-1-5-21-2317544477-3585906992-1592320480-1359_Classes:
Process 932 (\Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\svchost.exe) has opened key \REGISTRY\USER\S-1-5-21-2317544477-3585906992-1592320480-1359_CLASSES

followed with the Desktop Window Manager error code 9009:
The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0xd00002fe).

If a user on a blank desktop clicks on WindowsKey+E to open Windows Explorer, a dialog opens with the message:
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.

The error is the same for all standard users (administrator can login in just fine) on all Windows 8.1 computers. Computers have all clean installation with all updates installed.

I have browsed the internet for similar errors, but was unable to find the right sollution. Any help would be much appreciated.
