Windows 8.1 Update Carnage

HELP!

Just about every Windows 8.1 Update problem I have seen on the net in the last few weeks has hit my innocent little computer.

It is 10 months old, pre-installed with a legitimate copy of Windows 8. The update via the store last year was ok, but this recent monstrosity, (windows Update set to automatic install), has: 1)Intermittently trashed my internet connection, 2)added a very fetching 'Build 9600' tag to my screen, 3)disabled windows update, 4)put 'sfc /scannow' into a useless death spiral, 5)constantly nags me to activate it (all methods to do so fail miserably). There is more, but I can feel another headache coming on.

So, having taken two perfectly good XP computers offline, because they will no longer be updated, I am now left with a virtually new machine which is even more unsafe.

My question is this: If I start the on-board Lenovo restore process to re-build the original Windows 8 installation, will the fact that 8.1 has changed the operating system identity in the BIOS prevent me getting back to a stable windows 8 setup?

Don't forget, the Windows 8 was pre-installed - I don't have any discs. After weeks of trawling through contradictory garbage and guesswork on the forums, I am convinced that every turn of this Catch 22 maze leads to a dead end. The most malevolent malware writers could not have compromised my machine any better.

The question I keep asking myself is: I own 2 iPods, an iPhone and an iPad, what should my next desktop be?
