Upgrading from WIn 7 Home Premium to Win 8 pro - lost all usb drivers

I have Win 7 home premium. Bought Win 8 pro cd.

Inserted Cd and ran the upgrade keeping all existing settings. On initial start up system told me to delete/uninstall the following :

"Intel(R) Network Connections 16.6.126.0
Uninstall this app now because it isn't compatible with Windows 8. Uninstall

Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver
Uninstall this app now because it isn't compatible with Windows 8. "

I dually complied. All went well. It reached the point where it asked to "Personalize" settings. I had to select a COLOR to start with .. At this point I am STUCK ..

WHY .. because there is NO USB drivers so I have NO KEYBOARD and NO MOUSE with which to enter/select details !

Only option I had was to stop/reboot the pc .. at which point Win 8 upgrade did a restore to the previous version. Guess what .. still no USB drivers because it asked me to uninstall them before it did a restore point I assume ?

Then I loaded/booted from my Home Premimu CD.. coudl not select keyboard etc because again .. no mouse or keyboard

At this point I had to restore the system from a backup using "TODO" bootable cd+ backup ( excellent product by the way ).

So how do I proceed beyond the "Personalize" stage when I don't have USB drivers loaded ???

Thank you to anyone who can shed light on this ?
