Unable to rename or delete running file.

I am instaling Windows 8 Pro Upgrade on my laptop running Windows XP Pro and everything was running fine until I was asked to either keep my files or keep nothing for the upgrade, as I wanted to keep my files I chose that option but I was stopped by the message 'What Needs Your Attention, The following things need your attention before you can continue the installation.' And the message was, 'Change the folder or file name of C:\ProgramData on drive C:. '

When I tried to rename the folder, Windows kept bringing up the error, 'Cannot delete ProgramData: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.' As C: is the folder on my hard drive that is running Windows, I cannot stop it from running and am unable to rename the program file. Also I tried running the insalation with saving nothing and the same message poped up.
