My development laptop (asus 750g) recently recommended that I upgrade from windows 8 to 8.1
As a development machine it had SQL Server instances for 2008R2 and 2014 developer editions.
Once the upgrade had completed ALL instances became completely unusable
Looking in configuration manager I could see that services were missing.
Tried to run a repair - repeatedly failed.
Actions taken:
ran sqlcmd -L all existing instances listed.
Tried running a repair - failed. Updating permission for C:\WINDOWS\TEMP failed ...
Found that if AV is running the the ScenarioEngine.exe crashes asking to debug with following error line highlighted :
000000005C40FD10 mov dword ptr [5C4BD460h],0
Turning off AntiVirus, Windows Firewall, UAC
Tried running a repair again - first time failed, tried again this time seemed to go through,
Launched SSMS - unable to login, testing using both win auth and sql login
The config manager now showed the service as stopped, the protocol listing for new instance was visible - tried starting service.
the config manager shows it was running,
Seemed to have some affect as whilst having SSMS and Taskmanager open I could see that briefly I could connect to an instance but the service would then stop, after a few milliseconds it would show starting, running, stopped in a under a second - this behaviour repeated for several minutes.
tried a couple of tweaks then
Tried repair, failed, tried uninstall, reinstall - got the No mapping of account names and security ids error
Retested login through SSMS got actively refused error - so following this link
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2007/07/19/tcp-provider-no-connection-could-be-made-because-the-target-machine-actively-refused-it.aspx
Back into configuration manager - check protocols - tcpip enabled and amended the IPAII entry as listed under part 4 (b)
Didn't work - so reset back to previous setting.
Thought maybe the service is starting but failing somewhere else, possibly permissions based issues to local drives, so followed link suggestion

TAKEOWN /F <type in the path of the folder that you want to take
access>
ICACLS <type in the path of the folder that you want to take access>
/grant administrators:F
did this for all D, E and F drives
Didn't make any difference.
CURRENT STATUS
Unable to connect to existing 2008R2 instance
Did a complete removal of all SQL Server 2014 components. Turned off all uac, firewall, antivirus.
Setup folders on drives ensuring current user had ownership of folders.
Ran new Installation of SQL 2014 Developer - run as administrator - whilst the install completes - it hasn't completed successfully,
Launch config manager > Goto SQL Server Network Configuration
There are no protocols entry for the newly installed SQL Instance.
SO AS IT STANDS I HAD A SQL 2008R2 DEVELOPER EDITION AND A SQL 2014 DEVELOPER EDITION WORKING PERFECTLY HAPPILY - ALL WORKING TOWARDS MY COMPANY DEMO ON FRIDAY.
BUT
WINDOWS 8.1 UPGRADE - BOOM NOW ALL INSTANCES ARE COMPLETELY UNUSABLE, I'M UNABLE TO INSTALL A NEW INSTANCE.
30+HOURS AND COUNTING OF BEING UNABLE TO USE MY SQL SERVERS - THANKS MICROSOFT
everything tastes better with cheese
I'm trying to capture a windows 8 image from PE. I'm using dism to capture the C drive only. When I run dism, it finishes but I get an error 80.
---------------------------------
Error: 80
The file exists.
The DISM log file can be found at X:\windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log
Failed to create image
---------------------------------
I've checked my save location and there is no such file.
Upon examining the logs I find that dism thinks there is not enough space, followed by the file already exists. The drive that dism is saving to has over half a terabyte of free space.
[828] [0x80070070] ReadWriteDataInternal:(141): There is not enough space on the disk.
Any help would be appreciate!
I have been working on this issue for a few days and would welcome any advice!!!
I am sysprepping a custom image to capture to WDS. I have set this image up several times even on different machines but 2 issues are occurring: 1. It blue screens every time when shutting down after running sysprep (with generalize, and oobe set).
2. Sometimes if I force it off and run capture image it will detect the hard drive, but will not go past 1 percent progress.
I ran bluescreen viewer and I see ntoskrnl.exe as the cause but am not sure what this refers to.
Hey there!!!
I will get right down to the point... I want to install Win8.1 using WIMBoot method... I have an ASUS S451LN Notebook with the following specs:
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 (x64)
CPU: Intel Core-i5 4200U @1.60GHz-2.50GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR3L @1600GHz (4GB onboard + 4GB HyperX Impact)
SSD: 250GB Samsung 840 SSD (UEFI/GPT)
Now the OEM Win8.1 SL originally came installed on the OEM 750 HDD, I used ASUS Backtracker to backup the OEM image to a UEFI USB 3.0 Stick then installing it onto my Samsung 840 SSD... All is pretty much ok... A few issues with the partitioning layout and sector size... Anyways, I upgraded to Win8.1 Pro followed by Update 1 with no issues so far EXCEPT the HUGE amount of GB used my Windows!!! On the 93.1GB OS partition I'm down to 19GB and that's cuz I uninstalled a lot of programs and moved all personal data to the second partition and to OneDrive as Online-Only!!!
So now I would like to try installing by the WIMBoot method... I have the OEM Install.wim backed up already... My concern is HOW exactly to prepare and install as WIMBoot??? Preferably the simplest and most reliable process...
Thanks in advance!!!
I want to put the new windowsapp calculator on the desktop. After alot of searching, I found out that it's located in Program Files/WindowsApps and I had to change ownership and permissions in order to be able to view the folder. After doing all that, I couldn't find the name of the application.
In the older versions of windows, it used to be easy to find out information on an app by just right clicking it and then clicking on "properties".
Anyway - anyone know the name of the new calculator app? (Not calc.exe - which is the old one.)
I needed to change out my HD on my local system. I used the System Image Backup from File History to create the image. The image was created on a NAS server I use for data and backup in my home lab. The backup took just 20 minutes to make and appeared to finished successfully. The new drive was installed and I'm using flash drive media to boot the windows setup. After booting I selected Repair Your Computer. Then Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options and finally System Image Recovery. The System Image Recovery initially tells me it can't find any system image on this computer which would make sense. I hit cancel and then the radio button is automatically set to "Select a system image". The next screen has an advanced and refresh button. I hit advanced, then I go through the process to "Install a driver". Here I install the LAN driver for the NIC on the motherboard. I verify it's working by hitting Shift+F10 and running "ipconfig" and ping the NAS. Once that's confirmed I go back to the previous screen, I hit advanced again and this time hit "Search for a system image on the network". I hit Yes and then enter the network location and a username and password. It quickly flashes a screen like it's searching for a backup but then takes me back to the previous screen with no backups displayed. I know that the backup exists. I can browse it from other computer locations. The path is ||server|share|WindowsImageBackup. When I specify the location of the system image I set ||server|path. I've tried specifying ||server|share|WindowsImageBackup and even ||server|share|WindowsImageBackup|HOSTNAME but nothing ever comes up with a image in the list. The old drive has had it's data erased, didn't know I was going to have this problem, so I'm stuck. The image is a bit to big to put on a thumb drive so I'm trying to find a drive caddy with a spare HD to copy the image to.
Why won't System Image Recovery see the image on the network drive. I don't understand.
Side Note - I've had to use Pipes instead of backslashes. The forum automatically makes network locations into links and as I'm unverified I'm not allowed to post links I was unable to post this topic. Why I couldn't remove the links is beyond me. Everytime I hit delete and removed the "link" I would click away and the forum software recreated it as a link. Sorry but this is ridiculous. Either allow new users to post links or allow users to remove the linking component so that they can post. I'm a bit annoyed already at 2 in the morning trying to recovery my OS and this just t'ed me off. </rant>

thanks.
Will I still receive notification for windows 10 upgrade?
Why I ask is that I am not able to install 8.1 update package.
This has been a very frustrating experience.
I made a recovery usb drive for my laptop and decided to erase the drive and reinstall factory os with the usb recovery drive.
After logging in to the os, I looked at windows update and saw that there had been about 10 updates for my os that had already installed.
One of them is part of the 8.1 update package. Then I manually downloaded the 8.1 update package but had trouble getting any of the individual updates to install. All would not install and instead I was presented with a message that the packages were already installed.
After this, I looked again at windows update to see what updates had been installed. Only one of the updates for the 8.1 update package appeared, while 5 or 6 other packages did not show at all.
I have searched the net for other people with similar problems and notice that I am not the only one.
This laptop was bought new from a big box store about 3 months ago...Hopefully it will be eligible for the windows 10 upgrade.
Any help in figuring out this issue would be greatly appreciated.
I have been trying for some time to install update KB300850 on a Dell Venue Pro 11 tablet and when I do so it fails during the "configuring windows.." stage and reverts the update back.
I tried a system restore to factory settings and then installed KB300850 before any other update. This exhibited the same behaviour.
I then performed another factory reset and installed all other updates and then installed KB300850 and recevied the same issue.
I have tried running the following:
None of these options have resolved the issue. When I run the update, either through windows update or via a downloaded installer it reaches 99% then states "Failure configuring windows updates undoing changes".
I did read another thread which talked about a Kodak printer causing the install to fail, however, this system has no printers installed and has been factory reset so there is no other non-Microsoft / Dell software on the tablet.
There is nothing labelled "error" in the cbs log and the update log reports "Failure content Install Installation Failure: windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800f0922: Update for windows 8.1 (KB300850). I have tried to install KB2975061 but it states that this update is already installed.
Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue?
Hi,
when i go to computer info in windows 8 it is showing that i have 32-bit OS, x64-based Processor. i am slightly confused. does this mean i have a 32 bit OS installed but my computer is compatible with 64 bit?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
In Sysprep, the CopyProfile value is set to True and Sysprep is run from the local administrator account after the desired profile changes are completed. There are no other active profiles on our Windows 8.1 image.
After running Sysprep we are finding that it doesn’t copy the Profile. The setupact.log file on the computer it has "couldn't find a profile to copy" followed by "CopyProfile Succeeded". We can find no other information in this or other logfiles.
The folder C:\useres\Administrator is still present.
Can anyone tell us how we can make the "CopyProfile" operation work correctly?
