Win8.1 crashed the morning of two finals. Now they insist that I purchase a new license!

Please excuse me for not remembering things very well, I was extremely stressed before Windows broke, I have a poor memory at the best of times, and I was not in a position to type up the error messages and use Google.  What is worse is that I was not even using my computer!  I had just woken up and was sitting next to it, looking at a book!

It said something about needing to fix a boot error, which did not make sense since Windows was already running, not in the process of booting.  I went through the menu and found the recovery menu, but most of the options asked me what version of Windows I was running, only giving me the option of saying 8.1, and responding "This service is not available on this system."  What?!

I finally get to the HP Recovery menu, which loads the Windows functions that Windows refused to run.  I tried three times to restore older and older points, but after a great deal of time, I just received the same error message, that my antivirus was preventing the restoration, I needed to disable it to continue.

How was I supposed to do that?!

I finally told it to reset Windows to its factory settings and it keeps telling me "This product key doesn't work. You might need to get in touch with the store or company you bought Windows from, or you can buy a new key from Microsoft."  There is not any reason for me to purchase a new license, but it is not giving me any other options.
