Trouble with Windows not recognising internal drive

This has me stumped.

I have a shuttle SZ77R5. Bios and mobo drivers are the latest from the site.

I had a Win7 system running from an SSD using a SATA 2TB WD Caviar Black drive for data. Win8 refused to install onto the SSD.

I decided to give it another go. Once I disconnected the internal HDD, Win 8 installed on SSD without complaint. However, when I reconnected the HDD, Win 8 refuses to see it. I need to be a bit more specific:

1. The HDD appears in the BIOS.

2. If I put the drive in an external enclosure and attach via USB 2.0, both Win 8 Device Manager and Drive Management will see it.

3. I have been able to disconnect the SSD, install Win 7 on the HDD and boot from it.

4. I have been able to re-connect the SSD, boot into Win 7 from the HDD and see both disks

5. If I change the boot order in the BIOS and boot into Win 8 from the SSD, the HDD cannot be seen either in Device Manager or Drive Management. Nor, as it happens, in EaseUS Partition Manager.

6. I have tried re-formatting the HDD  but that made no difference

7.I have tried erasing the drive and re-connecting it unformatted but that made no difference.

8.I have swapped out the SATA cable and attached to a different SATA port on the Mobo. Neither made any difference.

8. I have tried connecting a spare 250GB SATA drive internally and thatwas recognised.

I just don't seem to be able to get Win 8 to recognise this particular HDD when installed internally via SATA if I boot from the SSD.

My grateful thanks and a Nobel Prize for the solution.

Sean
